Happy #GivingTuesday! Although the November holidays seem to be never-ending, we save the best for last. Giving Tuesday has become a global movement that encourages people to stop in their tracks and give to a cause they care about. Today is a great day to celebrate the spirit of giving, however, it is just the start to the season of giving back and helping others. Here are a few organizations with volunteering opportunities to help you keep up the good work.
Everyone can admit that recess was by far the best part of elementary school. The ability to play is something so special that no one should be able to take away from you. KaBOOM! works to give all children across the country access to play by building public play areas with the help from the local community and their national partners. Over the years, play has decreased while obesity rates and behavioral and cognitive disorders have increased. To help reverse these statistics and learn more about supporting KaBOOM!’s mission, you can visit their website here.
2. No Kid Hungry
Did you know 1 in 5 U.S kids don’t get the food they need? With your help, that can change. No Kid Hungry works to ensure every child in America has access to healthy food, wherever they are. This is a great opportunity to use one of the many recipes you got from your Auntie Martha over the holidays and host a bake sale to help fundraise for No Kid Hungry. They even offer a free bake sale planning guide! To be a part of the solution and help end hunger in your community, click here.
3. Back on My Feet
This one is for all you athletes out there. Back on My Feet offers a solution to homelessness through the power of running! Recruiters reach out to homeless and residential facilities to find members and then it all begins with a commitment to run three days a week. After 90% commitment for a month, members can begin the job and housing search process with the help from many national partners. Back on My Feet is always looking for volunteers to run with them in the mornings. If this interests you, more information about times and locations can be found here. Happy Running!
4. Give Back Box
Along with the holiday season comes the many (almost too many) parties with family and friends. If you’re hosting, the endless cleaning and de-cluttering can become overwhelming. Give Back Box offers a great alternative to this unnecessary stress. All you have to do is find an old cardboard box you have laying around and fill it up with any household items you are ready to give away. It’s that simple! You are doing your part for the environment, and helping those living in poverty. Not to mention the organization pays for the shipping label, so it is completely free. If you have already gathered a bundle of junk from your desk by the time you’ve finished reading this, check out their website here for information on the next steps.
Attention young adults: if these organizations aren’t your cup of tea, you can definitely find a cause that matches with your interests at DoSomething.org. Join forces with over 5.4 million young people to help “make the world suck less.” Whether it’s Smile for Soldiers or Teens for Jeans, you are bound to find a unique charity that could use your help.
