Capture6 Raises $27.5M to Scale Fresh Water Production and Carbon Removal

Climate instability and water scarcity are two of the world's most pressing challenges. Addressing both simultaneously, Capture6, a water-positive carbon removal company, has announced a successful $27.5 million Series A and project funding round to scale its innovative solution.

The funding will help Capture6 expand its global footprint and accelerate the deployment of its cutting-edge technology, which converts waste brine into both fresh water and carbon removal solutions.

About Capture6

Based in California and New Zealand, Capture6 develops and commercializes highly scalable carbon removal solutions that repurpose industrial-scale technologies.

The company’s approach supports desalination efforts by recovering over 50% of freshwater from waste brine, reinforcing its commitment to climate resilience and sustainable water management.

A New Approach to Water and Carbon Management

Unlike traditional direct air capture systems that require energy-intensive, multi-step processes, Capture6's integrated system repurposes waste brine from desalination and wastewater treatment facilities.

The process not only removes CO₂ from the atmosphere but also recovers fresh water and produces valuable green chemicals, reducing both waste disposal costs and carbon emissions.

Key benefits of Capture6’s technology:

  • Transforms waste brine into a CO₂ mineralization solvent for efficient carbon removal.
  • Reduces waste disposal costs while enhancing water production efficiency.
  • Creates green chemicals that benefit water treatment facilities.
  • Increases fresh water supply by recovering otherwise wasted water.
  • Seamlessly integrates with existing infrastructure, making it a scalable solution.

Major Investment to Scale Operations

Capture6’s Series A and project funding round was led by Tetrad Corporation, with participation from several prominent investors, including:

  • Hyundai Motor Group's ZER01NE Ventures
  • Energy Capital Ventures
  • Elemental Impact
  • Bridge Investment
  • Sopoong Ventures
  • Third Derivative
  • Stan and Jane Rodbell
  • The Jacob S. Shapiro Foundation

This financial backing will enable Capture6 to expand its pipeline of projects across the U.S., South Korea, New Zealand, Australia, and the Middle East.

A Breakthrough Partnership in California 🌎

One of Capture6’s latest milestone projects is a strategic partnership with the Palmdale Water District in Southern California. The initiative aims to eliminate the need for up to 100 acres of brine ponds, cutting lifetime costs by 40%.

By implementing Capture6’s technology, the district will provide sustainable water supplies while helping California advance its carbon neutrality goals by 2045.

💬 “Climate change is driving up demand for fresh water and worsening the problem as current water treatment methods are carbon-intensive. Our approach reduces waste, recovers fresh water, and removes CO₂ simultaneously,” said Ethan Cohen-Cole, CEO of Capture6.

💬 “Numerous businesses and industries struggle with wastewater disposal and fresh water acquisition. Capture6 offers a practical, cost-saving solution,” added Aaron Hilkemann, board member at Tetrad Corporation.

A Future-Ready Solution for Water and Climate Resilience

With fresh water demand projected to exceed supply by 40% by 2030 (World Economic Forum), Capture6’s innovative technology provides a sustainable path forward.

By seamlessly integrating with existing industrial infrastructure, the company offers a scalable, cost-effective solution that addresses both water security and carbon removal—an essential step toward a more resilient future.

💬 “Fresh water scarcity requires rethinking traditional infrastructure,” said Danya Hakeem, VP of Portfolio at Elemental Impact. “Capture6 is helping communities access reliable, clean water while delivering significant cost savings.”

Expanding Global Impact 🌍

Capture6 has announced four water-positive carbon capture facilities across three continents, and in 2024, facilitated a pre-purchase of 1,000 tons of carbon removal for Shopify and Stripe through Frontier.

As the company scales, it is positioning itself as a leader in climate resilience and industrial decarbonization.

💬 “The technologies with the biggest potential impact are those that enable clean, safe, reliable, and cost-effective energy,” said Vic Pascucci of Energy Capital Ventures. “Capture6 is a game-changer in carbon removal and water security.”

With its latest funding and growing global partnerships, Capture6 is proving that climate action and economic growth can go hand in hand. By tackling fresh water scarcity and carbon emissions simultaneously, the company is paving the way for a more sustainable future.
