If you’ve ever looked into the sustainability of a fashion brand, you know how confusing and time-consuming it can be to figure out if they check all the right boxes … especially as big name brands scramble to cater to a growing market of consumers who care about the social and environmental impact of their purchases.
Instead of adopting more sustainable practices, these brands often greenwash, or market their product lines to be more sustainable than they really are.
In other words, brands often exaggerate their sustainability efforts to try to get more sales.
It can be difficult to tell if a brand is truly invested in more ethical and sustainable practices, or if they’re greenwashing. Luckily, there are people out there doing the research for us.
This is where Eco-Stylist comes in.
Who is Eco-Stylist?
Eco-Stylist is your go-to guide for finding ethically made, stylish clothing.
Using their sustainable brand criteria, Eco-Stylist does the hard work of vetting brands for you by thoroughly researching their transparency, labor practices, and the sustainability of their products and practices.
Listen to more Causeartist podcasts here.
In addition to this criteria, their research is guided by three questions: Do we trust the brand?
Do they inspire us? Are they fast fashion? If a brand passes, they’re added to Eco-Stylist’s directory, ensuring their status as a brand you can trust.
From there, brands are separated into three ratings: Certified, Silver, and Gold. While each rating guarantees a brand’s status as sustainable fashion (after all, the vast majority of brands fail Eco-Stylist’s criteria), these ratings help ensure that even among the best brands on earth, there is still room to grow.
Since their founding in 2018, Eco-Stylist has managed to refine the direction they’re headed while continuing to grow and expand.
Once focused specifically on bringing men into the sustainable fashion agenda, Eco-Stylist’s focus has expanded to include people of all genders, and their brand directory now reflects that.
In alignment with their goal of making the world of sustainable fashion more accessible for all, they recently adopted a new mission: To accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable clothing by cultivating a community of brands you can trust.
This acceleration includes making the process of buying sustainable clothing as simple as possible. Eco-Stylist continuously evaluates new brands and adds them to their directory, which has grown to include over 90 different brands.
Whether you’re looking for workout clothes, a new bathing suit, an outfit to wear to your best friend’s wedding, shoes for work, or a fashionable pair of glasses, there’s truly something for everyone … and the directory is only growing.
Additionally, Eco-Stylist has worked to make their directory even more navigable, adopting a new layout and design and allowing consumers to view price range information.
New filters also allow you to search by gender, type of clothing, location, inclusive sizing, values and ownership, and rating (Certified, Silver, or Gold), making it easier than ever to find exactly what you’re searching for.
One Stop Shop
Eco-Stylist has added over 1,000 items to their shop, which features curated items from their partnered brands. This makes it simple to find any item of clothing you may need, from swim trunks to puffer jackets.
If you’re looking for a gift (or for a new item of clothing for yourself) this is a good place to start. You can sort items across genders, categories, and brands, as well as search by price.
It goes without saying that everything featured in the shop falls under the category of ethical and sustainable fashion.
The shop is also a good place to look for sales across different brands. Simply filter by “On Sale” on the left hand-side of the shop, or visit their Sales page, which Eco-Stylist keeps updated throughout the year.
Eco-Stylist’s next steps? Sustainability consulting.
Eco-Stylist aims to be a resource for all, meaning consumers and brands alike. That’s why they started offering sustainability consulting for brands who would like to improve their practices but need a little help knowing which direction to take.
Each year, hundreds of brands are submitted for Eco-Stylist to review and (potentially) add to their directory.
While the vast majority of brands fail their criteria, Eco-Stylist sees this as an important opportunity to help brands improve and eventually reach Certification.
Sustainability consulting includes researching brands, delivering results, and sharing a Sustainability Roadmap, which includes the exact next steps needed for the brand to reach Certification.
If the brand puts in the work and takes the steps listed in the Roadmap, they’re guaranteed to be Certified.
Additionally, if a brand is already Certified, Eco-Stylist offers the same service to help them advance to Silver or Gold. Interested brands can contact Eco-Stylist for more information.
In a world where fast fashion is the norm, brands who care to make a difference need all the resources they can get to grow and change, and consumers need resources to ensure they’re making choices that align with their values.
As they accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable clothing, Eco-Stylist is here for you.
