GOTS-Certified (Global Organic Textile Standard) Explained

GOTS-Certified (Global Organic Textile Standard) ensures organic fiber integrity, strict chemical controls, fair labor, and lower environmental impact in textile production.

GOTS-Certified (Global Organic Textile Standard) Explained

GOTS-Certified (Global Organic Textile Standard) is the leading worldwide standard for organic fibers, ensuring that textiles are produced from at least 70% certified organic natural materials.

GOTS certification covers every step of the textile supply chain—from harvesting of raw materials through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing—to provide consumers with a trustworthy organic textile standard for apparel, home textiles, and accessories.

Key Benefits

Who Issues It

GOTS certification is administered by independent third-party organizations accredited by the International Working Group on Global Organic Textile Standard. During the audit process, certified bodies assess every stage of production:

  1. Farm Inspection: Verifies that agricultural inputs meet organic farming requirements.
  2. Processing Audit: Reviews fiber handling, spinning, weaving/knitting, dyeing, and printing facilities for chemical use, resource management, and effluent treatments.
  3. Social Compliance Check: Evaluates labor conditions against International Labour Organization (ILO) criteria.
  4. Labeling Review: Ensures accurate use of GOTS trademarks, grade labels (e.g., “organic” with ≥95% certified fibers), and traceability documentation.

To remain certified, companies undergo annual inspections and must demonstrate continuous compliance with GOTS’s environmental and social criteria, making it the gold standard for sustainable fabric certification.
