How Real World Asset Tokenization Can Positively Impact the World

How Real World Asset Tokenization Can Positively Impact the World

Over the past decade, like many of us, I've watched the cryptocurrency sector grow into a global phenomenon. During this time, I’ve had the opportunity to interview founders and investors, create crypto wallets, and experiment with stablecoins, Bitcoin, and NFTs.

My aim has always been to learn, understand the ecosystem, and explore the future of digital currencies and digital assets.

While the media tends to only highlight the negative aspects of crypto, it's important to remember that, like any emerging technology, the sector will have both positive and negative impacts on society.

At Causeartist, my focus over the last 10 years has been on the positive stories—the people and brands making a meaningful impact in the world.

I believe the blockchain and crypto community is at a turning point.

We’re beginning to see real-world benefits of this technology that could reshape industries.

Negative actors will always exist, but here, I want to focus on the potential positives.

One of the most promising advancements is the concept of Real World Asset (RWA) tokenization. According to Tren Finance’s recent report, The Great Tokenization, this trend has the power to revolutionize our relationship with tangible and intangible assets.

RWA tokenization fosters a more inclusive and efficient financial landscape by enhancing liquidity, enabling fractional ownership, increasing transparency, and reducing costs.

By converting assets into digital tokens on a blockchain, tokenization makes a wide range of assets—from real estate to carbon credits—accessible to a larger audience.

This shift is accelerating sustainable development and economic empowerment on a global scale. It’s an innovation that cannot be overlooked; it needs to be tested, refined, and invested in.

After diving into the report, I wanted to share some key takeaways and examples of how tokenizing real-world assets could transform the lives of billions around the world.

Increasing Financial Inclusivity Through Fractional Ownership

Tokenization allows high-value assets to be divided into smaller, affordable shares, making them accessible to more people.

This is particularly transformative in real estate, where platforms like re.al offer tokens representing shares in residential and commercial properties.

This model opens the door for people across various income levels to benefit from an asset class previously reserved for high-net-worth individuals.

Fractional ownership not only democratizes investment but also promotes wealth creation and diversification for a broader audience

Promoting Environmental Sustainability with Tokenized Carbon Credits

Blockchain platforms like Toucan and Carbonpath are leveraging tokenization to enhance transparency and accountability in carbon offsetting efforts.

By recording carbon credits on a blockchain, these platforms make each credit verifiable, allowing organizations to engage in sustainable practices with greater credibility.

For instance, Toucan tokenizes verified carbon credits to support environmental initiatives, making it easier for companies to track their contributions to climate action.

This transparency is crucial for ensuring that sustainability goals are met efficiently and responsibly

Empowering Creators Through Tokenized Intellectual Property

Tokenization provides new opportunities for creators to monetize their intellectual property (IP). Platforms like Royal.io allow artists and inventors to sell tokenized shares of music royalties, patents, and copyrights, directly connecting creators with supporters.

Fans and investors can buy tokens representing a share in future revenue, providing creators with upfront funding and fostering a community-supported creative ecosystem.

This decentralized model helps artists retain control over their work while offering supporters a chance to participate in the creative process

Enhancing Market Efficiency and Transparency

Blockchain’s immutable ledger enhances transparency in asset trading and ownership. Each transaction is securely recorded on a public ledger, reducing fraud risks and allowing markets to operate more efficiently.

Tokenized commodities like gold and oil, for instance, can be traced from their origin to the current owner, making trading more secure and accessible.

With 24/7 trading capabilities, blockchain-powered markets provide a level of flexibility and transparency that traditional systems lack, supporting a more reliable and liquid marketplace

Expanding Tokenization to New Asset Classes

Tokenization is also driving innovation in asset classes that were once inaccessible to the average investor.

Here are a few examples:

  • GainForest: This platform tokenizes forest conservation efforts, allowing people to sponsor and track protected forest areas. The real-time monitoring promotes sustainable land use and helps prevent deforestation.
  • Zoth: By tokenizing real-world assets, Zoth provides financial services to underserved communities in emerging markets, offering transparent and accessible financial tools in regions with limited banking options.
  • Huma Finance: Huma leverages tokenization for peer-to-peer lending, making credit more accessible to those without traditional banking access. Borrowers can use tokenized assets as collateral, bypassing traditional credit checks and fostering financial inclusion.
  • impactMarket: impactMarket is a decentralized protocol designed for poverty alleviation through the distribution of unconditional basic income (UBI) to those in need. It expands access to DeFi solutions, aiming to empower the 1.7 billion unbanked people worldwide.

Tokenizing Environmental Assets for Sustainability

Tokenization also brings added benefits to the trading of environmental assets, such as carbon credits, which increases transparency and efficiency across borders:

  • Solid World: By tokenizing carbon credits, Solid World enables easier trading of carbon credits, supporting both individual and corporate efforts to offset emissions.
  • Toucan: This platform allows organizations to engage in transparent carbon offsetting by tokenizing verified credits, supporting credible sustainability initiatives.
  • Carbonpath: Focusing on U.S. carbon markets, Carbonpath simplifies the trading and tracking of carbon credits, helping businesses efficiently offset their emissions while enhancing accountability.
  • Moss: Moss tokenizes carbon credits from verified Amazon rainforest projects, providing a seamless way for companies and individuals to offset their carbon footprint. Moss.Earth’s blockchain-based system ensures transparency and traceability, empowering stakeholders to support impactful reforestation and conservation initiatives.

Potential Future Applications of Tokenization

Looking forward, tokenization could extend to additional sectors, each with unique impacts:

Healthcare Assets

  • Current Issues: Patient data in centralized systems is highly susceptible to breaches, with millions of records leaked annually. Additionally, data is often inaccessible to patients, who have limited control over their own information. The sale of anonymized patient data by third parties is also a significant privacy concern, as patients rarely see any of the profits from this data usage.
  • Tokenization Solution: Blockchain can enhance data security by encrypting patient records on an immutable ledger, making it nearly impossible for hackers to alter or delete records. Patients could maintain control over their data and grant access on an as-needed basis, with the option to monetize their data directly. Through tokenization, patients could even receive income streams for contributing data to medical research, incentivizing more active participation in healthcare advancements.

Agricultural Commodities

  • Current Issues: Farmers often face financial constraints and lack access to immediate capital, relying heavily on loans or advances that come with high interest rates. Additionally, there is little transparency in agricultural markets, and farmers often receive a small share of the final product’s market value.
  • Tokenization Solution: Tokenization could allow farmers to tokenize future crop yields, giving them access to immediate capital through direct investments, bypassing traditional loan structures. A decentralized marketplace for these tokenized assets would increase transparency, allowing investors and consumers to see exactly where their products come from. This transparency could lead to more equitable pricing, giving farmers a larger share of their production’s value.

Renewable Energy Assets

  • Current Issues: Investment in renewable energy often requires dealing with intermediaries and complex bureaucratic processes, which can deter potential investors. Additionally, there’s a lack of transparency in tracking the source and distribution of renewable energy credits, which can result in double spending or fraud.
  • Tokenization Solution: Blockchain-based tokenization can provide clear and immutable records of renewable energy production, enabling direct peer-to-peer trading of energy credits(example Power Ledger). Tokenized renewable energy assets make it simpler for investors to fund green projects, which in turn provides capital for expansion. These tokens can streamline trading and ensure that each energy credit is unique, preventing issues like double spending and enhancing the credibility of carbon offset initiatives.

Cultural and Heritage Sites

  • Current Issues: Funding for the preservation of cultural sites is often limited to government grants or private donations, which can be inconsistent. Additionally, there’s little opportunity for the public to engage directly with these initiatives, and transparency in funding allocations can be limited.
  • Tokenization Solution: Tokenizing cultural and heritage sites could allow global citizens to invest directly in preservation efforts, democratizing access to funding these initiatives. Token holders could receive returns based on tourism revenue or enjoy benefits such as discounted entry fees. Blockchain’s transparency would also ensure that funds go directly toward the maintenance and preservation of these sites, enhancing public trust and engagement.

Education and Student Loans

  • Current Issues: Traditional student loans come with high interest rates and limited flexibility, leaving students burdened with debt. Furthermore, verifying academic credentials is often a manual, time-consuming process susceptible to fraud.
  • Tokenization Solution: Tokenizing student loans could allow investors to directly fund students’ education in exchange for a percentage of future earnings. This would eliminate the need for predatory loan structures and provide more flexible repayment options. Additionally, tokenizing academic achievements as NFTs or other digital assets could streamline credential verification, making it faster and easier for institutions and employers to confirm qualifications.

Government Bonds and Public Infrastructure

  • Current Issues: Government bonds are generally accessible only through financial institutions and brokers, which limits public participation. Additionally, there is limited transparency in how public infrastructure funds are allocated and managed, leading to potential inefficiencies and lack of accountability.
  • Tokenization Solution: Tokenizing government bonds and public projects would enable fractional ownership, allowing citizens to directly invest in their communities. Blockchain-based tokens could provide real-time transparency into the funding and spending of public projects, ensuring that funds are used efficiently. This model could foster greater public involvement and accountability in government spending.

Supply Chain and Inventory Assets

  • Current Issues: Centralized supply chains often lack transparency, making it difficult to trace the origin and journey of products. This lack of traceability can lead to fraud, counterfeiting, and inefficiencies in inventory management.
  • Tokenization Solution: Tokenizing assets within the supply chain would enhance traceability, allowing consumers and businesses to track products from raw material to end product. Blockchain’s immutable records would help prevent counterfeiting and improve accountability across the supply chain. Tokenized inventory assets could also streamline inventory management by enabling real-time tracking and efficient resource allocation.

Philanthropy and Charitable Donations

  • Current Issues: Donors often lack visibility into how their contributions are utilized, which can lead to distrust in charitable organizations. There is also a significant reliance on intermediaries, which can slow down fund allocation and increase administrative costs.
  • Tokenization Solution: Tokenizing donations can provide donors with real-time insights into the impact of their contributions, allowing them to track how funds are spent and which projects benefit. Blockchain’s transparency would build trust by ensuring that donations go directly toward intended causes, while reducing administrative overhead. Charities could also issue tokens representing specific projects, creating a more interactive and engaging donation experience for supporters.
