In a notable collaboration for global conservation efforts, dClimate, a significant contributor to decentralized climate data infrastructure, has officially established a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
This strategic alliance aims to safeguard the ecologically diverse Congo Basin rainforest and peatlands.
The key focus of this landmark MOU is the preservation of hundreds of thousands of hectares, reflecting a joint commitment to innovative environmental stewardship.
By aligning with the guidelines outlined in Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, dClimate is poised to play a pivotal role in the development of the DRC’s national carbon registry.
This initiative is projected to store and sequester over 100 million tonnes of CO2, generating conservation credits of the highest quality.
These credits are designed to infuse integrity and transparency into global carbon markets, emphasizing data quality, integrity, and standards, in addition to fostering strong collaboration with the national government and local communities.

Highlighting the critical role of the Congo Basin rainforests and peatlands in carbon storage, the collaboration will focus on the importance of financially incentivizing environmental conservation through cutting-edge technology, ensuring benefits for local populations while safeguarding these crucial areas for future generations.

The partnership will strategically address deforestation through community education, infrastructure enhancement, and environmental training programs.
Importantly, dClimate will lease carbon sequestration rights for an initial ten-year period, preserving national sovereignty and the rights of local communities by refraining from leasing or purchasing the land.
Stephanie Mbombo, Special Envoy for the New Climate Economy of the Democratic Republic of Congo, emphasized the collaboration’s significance under the leadership of President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi.
She stated, “This collaboration not only aims to protect one of the Earth’s most vital ecosystems but also empowers our communities through sustainable development.”
The project integrates cutting-edge technology, incorporating blockchain and CYCLOPS, a digital MRV (measurement, reporting, verification) platform.
Leveraging remote sensing technology and artificial intelligence, CYCLOPS ensures the project’s commitments to preventing deforestation are upheld.
dClimate plans to collaborate with the DRC to extend the use of CYCLOPS for environmental monitoring nationwide, aligning with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
